Enjoy Free Streaming of Metropolitan Opera’s performance (During Stay-At-Home periods):Nightly Met Opera Streams

Today’s topic is free streaming of Metropolitan Opera House’s past performances. Metropolitan Opera House has been providing free streaming service of their opera since mid-March of 2020. Free streaming is limited to one title each day. Title is pre-selected, and at this point, program for Week 22 (August 10, 2020 through August 16, 2020) has been announced.

[Note] This is a translation of Japanese article I published on May 16, 2020. I have been updating Japanese page weekly, and finally motivated to translate it to English. I plan to update this page every week until Metropolitan Opera House will stop free streaming.

1.1 Nightly Opera Streams

As part of the containment of Coronavirus spread, all the entertainment-related facilities in New York City have been temporarily closed since March 12, 2020. The Metropolitan Opera House is one of such facilities.

I noticed that they have been offering free opera streaming since the temporary closure had started. Each day, performance becomes available from 7:30 p.m. EDT for 23 hours, i.e., until 6:30 p.m. of the following day.

The streaming is available through not only Met Opera’s website, but also smartphone, tablet, Roku devices and smart TVs. Downloading “Met Opera on Demand” app is required in case of the latter. Please see the below website for the details.

1.2(Reference)Price for unlimited Streaming of “Met Opera on Demand”

By the way, under regular circumstances, streaming of Met Opera on demand is a paid service, and we are supposed to either rent ($4.99 per title) or subscribe to start viewing available titles. Subscriber can view all the available titles but it costs $14.99/month or $149.99/year.

2. Dates and titles of the Operas which are Available for Free Streaming

Below is a list of dates and titles of the operas which were chosen to be streamed each day. Schedule has been updated every week (around mid-week). So, I will update this list when additional schedule become available.

Title of each performance contains a link to the Synopsis page of the corresponding title in the Metropolitan Opera website. “Read Program” contains a link to a PDF version of Playbill that corresponds to the day when the opera was performed.
